It just depends on what you are looking for in an attorney and what the problem is all about. I am an attorney and I have also hired attorneys for personal matters. Just because they have a specialization like family law, etc. does not necessarily mean they are any good. I guess it also depends on your expectations. For example, just because you hire a criminal defense attorney does not mean you will get the case dismissed.
Start by looking at the State Bar of California website to see if the member has any record of discipline. Ask around the court or consider the attorneys length of time practicing in a particular area of law. Find someone who specializes in a particialr area or look for a firm with a good reputation.
Ask him what kind of car he drives….
Lexus, BMW, Corvet, any of the more expensive cars and you can bet he is a good lawyer…
VW, Ford Escort, Hyundai, although great cars…. usually means new lawyer or BAD lawyer… or public defender..
