Is it legal for a lawyer to pay you a referral fee for sending him business?

I had sent one personal injury attorney’s paralegal quite a bit of business. When a friend recommended I inquire if he’d be willing to pay some sort of fee for future referrals, buy antibiotics without prescription he said it was illegal to even discuss such things.
All these referrals were personal friends (I don’t work for a hospital or an ambulance service or something) so I don’t understand why that would be illegal. Any ideas?

I don’t think so. Many companies give incentives to employees and their friends and families to refer business. As long as you’re not doing anything unethical, its fine.
no.
